i hate to be snotty …
i hate to be snotty but this is a VERY antiquated technique.

pulling alkaline color down on previously colored hair will only overprocess the hair. pulling random spots down to the ends would only cause muddy lowlights–not highlights as mentioned.

if hair is faded on the ends the only reasonable approach would be to use a non-ammonia demi color that is about 1/2-1 shade lighter and a touch warmer… as dry ends will grab color cooler and darker than the roots.
